The UCL Summer School gives students the opportunity to study in central London for three or six weeks over the summer and gain credit from a world top 10 university (ranked ninth in the world overall, QS 2026). Not only are a wide range of modules available, many of the module tutors on the UCL Summer School are leading academics in their fields. All modules are developed by UCL academics for credit based on cutting edge research and taught face-to-face in interactive, participatory classes. UCL accommodation is guaranteed at a discounted rate, and students can take part in a diverse programme of optional social and cultural events in the evenings and at the weekends. In 2025, the UCL Summer School students represented 300 universities in 66 countries and 97% of students surveyed would recommend the experience to friends.
The UCL Summer School offers an intensive and immersive learning experience, divided into two sessions, with each session lasting three weeks. Students have the flexibility to attend either Session One, Session Two, or both, enrolling in one module per session. Every module demands a substantial investment of time, encompassing 45 contact hours and around 100 additional study hours over the three-week period, representing a full-time commitment. Consequently, pursuing full-time studies or employment concurrently with the UCL Summer School is not recommended.
Most of the modules are primarily level one, equivalent to first-year undergraduate studies, and usually do not necessitate any prior subject knowledge, with the standard Summer School entry requirements being sufficient. These modules are designed to offer introductions to potentially new subject areas, often adopting interdisciplinary approaches, and enabling students to explore subjects from fresh perspectives, either globally or through the distinctive lens of London. However, some modules are at level two or three, requiring some previous subject knowledge along with the standard entry requirements, and these modules aim to advance prior learning in specific subject areas. Where prerequisites are necessary, they are clearly outlined on the individual module pages. The selection of modules is vast, and although a background in certain areas is preferred for some, most do not require prior subject knowledge, allowing students to explore new academic terrains and perspectives.
The UCL Summer School offers a Social and Cultural Programme that takes place during the evenings and weekends. This allows students to explore the multifaceted city of London and other parts of the UK with their peers. The Social and Cultural Programme typically offers a variety of activities, such as welcome receptions on campus, quiz nights, karaoke nights, sports events, riverside walks and picnics all designed to help students connect with each other and create lasting memories. The programme also includes cultural outings to the Globe Theatre, allowing students to witness iconic Shakespeare plays in a historic setting and is traditionally concluded with a scenic boat party on the River Thames, where iconic landmarks like the Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf can be seen. Furthermore, students have the chance to participate in weekend day trips to other remarkable UK locations like Oxford, Bath, and Stonehenge.
UCL Summer School provides a variety of accommodation options including private bathrooms and studios to accommodate different budgets, ensuring a comfortable and home-like environment. They continually expand their portfolio of halls to meet the rising demand for places, with regular updates made available on their website. UCL strives to create a home away from home, emphasising comfort and support.
