A parent's guide to day summer camps

Day camps do a job residential camps cannot: they cover the working weeks of the summer holidays without sending a child away. For most families that is the actual problem being solved, and there is no reason to be coy about it. A good day camp is childcare a child looks forward to.

The two things to check first are hours and travel. A camp running ten until three does not cover a working day, and several add an early drop off and late collection for a fee, which is worth pricing in from the start. Then be honest about the journey: forty minutes each way is a different holiday from ten.

Day camps are also the sensible way to test whether a child is ready for a residential one. A week of day camp at nine tells you more about how they will manage at eleven than any amount of discussion in the kitchen.

Day Summer Camps: your questions answered

What hours do day camps run?

Nine until four is the most common core day, with many camps offering an early drop off from eight and a late collection until six for an additional charge. Check whether those extended hours are staffed with activities or are simply supervised time, as both are sold the same way.

Are meals included at a day camp?

Some provide a hot lunch, many ask children to bring a packed lunch, and most provide snacks and drinks. It is one of the more variable things between camps, so it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Can I book single days or do I have to book a full week?

Full weeks are standard and usually cheaper per day, but a good number of camps sell individual days, and some sell a flexible block to be used across the holidays. If your childcare need is patchy rather than continuous, ask, because it is often available and rarely advertised.

How much cheaper are day camps than residential ones?

Considerably, since accommodation, meals and evening staffing are the bulk of a residential fee. Use the budget filter above to compare, and note that prices are shown in each camp's own currency.
