Compare residential summer camps by dates, budget and length
A residential camp is a holiday and a first taste of independence at the same time, and for most families the second part is what makes the decision. Children come back having shared a room with someone from another country, sorted out their own laundry badly, and worked out that they can manage without you for a fortnight. That is worth as much as the tennis.
The practical questions are pastoral rather than academic. Who sleeps on the corridor, what the ratio of staff to children is overnight, how homesickness is handled in the first forty eight hours, and what happens if a child is ill at two in the morning. A camp that answers those clearly and specifically has thought about them. A camp that answers warmly but vaguely has not.
Two weeks is the most common length and, for a first residential, usually the right one. One week can be over before a shy child has settled. Four weeks is a long time to be away at thirteen, however much they insist otherwise in June.

Most residential camps start at eight or nine, and the majority of first timers are between ten and thirteen. Readiness matters more than age: a child who has managed sleepovers and a school residential will usually be fine, and one who has not may be happier doing a day camp first.
Well run camps expect it, plan for it and do not treat it as a failure. Ask what the first two evenings look like, how contact with home is managed, and at what point they would call you. Camps that ban all contact and camps that allow unlimited phone use both tend to make it worse.
Policies vary a lot. Some camps have set call times a few evenings a week, some allow phones at fixed hours, and a few are fully phone free. None of these is wrong, but it is worth knowing which one you are booking, because it is a common source of surprise in week one.
Accommodation, all meals, activities and evening entertainment are almost always included. Airport transfers, laundry, excursions and insurance often are not. Prices shown here are in the camp's own currency, exactly as the camp quotes them.
