Riding camps are unusual in that the horse matters as much as the instruction. A camp with well schooled, well matched ponies will give a nervous child a good week almost regardless of the teaching. A camp that puts a beginner on the wrong animal can put them off for years. Ask how horses are allocated and whether they are matched to ability.
Most riding camps include stable management alongside riding: mucking out, tacking up, feeding. Children who love horses love this part. Children who wanted to ride and did not expect to shovel sometimes do not. It is worth being clear with your child about the ratio before you book.
Two hours in the saddle a day is a lot for an unfit rider. Camps that advertise more usually mean total contact time with horses rather than riding time, which is a reasonable thing to offer but a different thing to buy.

Most riding camps take complete beginners and group by ability. A few advertise jumping or cross country weeks that assume a rider is already secure in canter. If your child has ridden fewer than ten times, say so when you book rather than on arrival.
Hats and body protectors are almost always available to borrow, and most camps insist on their own if yours does not meet current safety standards. Boots with a small heel are usually the family's responsibility. Jodhpurs are not compulsory anywhere sensible.
Riding carries real risk and a good camp will talk about it plainly rather than reassure you. Ask about instructor qualifications, the rider to instructor ratio in the arena, and what happens after a fall. A camp that has never had a fall is a camp that is not telling you everything.
